Bert's Memories - Part 3

The club has recently been contacted by David Murray (no, not the Rangers chairman), but an ex-Tannahill player who played in the Seventies and Eighties. David got married and moved to Hamilton, Ontario and now lives and works in Phoenix, Arizona, along with his wife and three boys.

Ex Tannahill player David Murray and his wife Mary Ann.

David has been kind enough to send an old team photograph to us. He says, "Took me a while but here is a photo taken I think in 80-81 season or maybe earlier. Not sure where the photo was taken but I think it was just after a Scottish Cup tie somewhere outside Glasgow. As you can see we were apparently short staffed. I think the photo was taken by club secretary and manager and everything else, Bert Johnson."

Tannahill AFC circa 1980

We contacted our friend Bert to give us his memories of this particular time. he says, " Ah the photo brings back vivid memories, a blast from the past. David Murray a genuine diamond at outside left and a prolific goal machine. He came to us a 17 year old and immediately became a permenant fixture in the side.

He played at the at the time Alex Ferguson was the manager at St. Mirren and I was on good terms with the secretary of the supporters club. I asked him to have a word with Fergie if he would perhaps give David a trial as he had seen him play and was very impressed. True to his word he talked to Fergie but he said he wasn't interestsed in an amateur, as if he was any good he would be playing under age Juvenile football. To say the least I was disappointed with Fergie's attitude as he hadn't seen the boy play. David was scoring 20 odd goals a season from the left wing so that shows, even in amateur football, a talent."

"Right, on to that picture. What memories I have of that team.

Back row left to right:

John Blair, inside forward, William McKelvie, right back, Michael Kenefick, centre back, Michael McKelvie, right midfield (William's brother), William McKelvie Jnr. left midfield (no relation to the other McKelvie's, I always put in Jnr to upset the other William), Raymond McCool, goalkeeper.

Front row left to right:

Tam Carnachan, sweeper, David Murray, outside left, Bobby Reid, left back and Club treasurer, Chic Nesbitt, centre forward or outside right, Crawford Balloch, inside forward and the smallest player to play for Tannahill.

I hope this is helpful to you and the history of Tannahill. All the Best From Bert Johnson.
